It’s time to start thinking about winterizing your windows and doors as the cold weather approaches. Energy efficient window treatments, coverings and even replacement windows can lower your heat consumption, utility costs and make your home or business premises more comfortable. Without properly insulated windows and frames, your building is susceptible to cold drafts, which will cause your furnace to work twice as hard to heat your indoor environment. If your windows are old, cracked, always moist or foggy and beyond repair, think about installing new replacement windows to conserve energy and save money.

Many have been shown and may be considering triple pane glass as an option in replacing their windows. This might be a good choice but let’s look at the cost and benefits. The reason many people believe that triple pane glass is better than double pane glass is because of the increased energy efficiency or energy savings especially here in Texas because of all the heat.

Before we can appreciate the following information a few definitions need to be made. The two terms that are used in the industry to describe the energy efficiency of a window are U-Factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. The first term determines the ability of the window to keep heat in your home in the winter time and the second term describes how well the frame and glass will keep radiant heat from coming into your home. The lower the number the better job it is doing.

Most aluminum builder grade windows have a SHGC of about 75 which means that is keeping out about 25% of the radiant heat. An Energy Star rated window has a SHGC of 40 keeping 60% of radiant heat out. The newest windows on the market with Low E3 (cubed) glass filled with Argon gas has a SHGC of about 20 or 21, quite an improvement over the builder’s grade window. Now if a person were to go to triple pane with Argon gas how much of a difference would it make? It would only bring down the SHGC to 19, a 1% gain. The typical cost can be anywhere from 25% to 35% more than the double pane. Would that justify the added expense and the added weight to the window? I’ll let you be the judge. Keep in mind that some will use it to differentiate themselves from the competition without explaining these differences.

Choosing a local replacement window company with a good history of business, providing a lifetime warranty, and a dealer whom you trust with quality experienced crews, should be more important to you than double or triple pane windows. If you would like a free estimate of your replacement windows to be replaced with quality energy efficient windows please call 972-398-6105.

What is the best choice to make your home beautiful, Vinyl Siding, Hardie Plank or Stone Veneer?

Hardie Plank?

Today we are blessed with a number of choices as to what to use to cover our homes. Vinyl siding has long been the choice since aluminum siding was once used. Few use aluminum siding because of the damage to it by hail. Recently, Hardie Plank has become popular. According to the pros it can be made to look like most woods, is color impregnated and is more fire resistant than wood or vinyl.

The negatives are the weight. Is about 3X heavier than vinyl, more labor intensive to install which adds to the price, and is about double the price of vinyl. As far as durability the color is good for about 10 years or so before it needs to be repainted, holds up well in most weather but not as well to hail damage. It is also expensive to repair as upper panels must be removed to replace lower damage and this can lead to damage those panels as well.

Vinyl siding?

Vinyl siding can be a good choice as long as it isn’t coextruded. This where recycled vinyl is melted down and layered with new coated of your color choice. This will lead to separation later. Builder grade siding can be thin and can warp and bow. Quality vinyl siding is about 43 mils or heavier and is colored all the way through with the same color. Most have a lifetime warranty to the original owner. It doesn’t need to be repainted and is easy to repair if damaged. It normally runs between $300 per 100 sq. ft. to over a $1,000 per 100 sq. ft. depending on the dealer you buy from.

Stone veneer?

Stone veneer is now available as an aftermarket product and comes in many colors and styles. It can be used to do the whole house or to accent certain areas. It can also be used inside for fireplaces and accents. It is typically around twice the price of average vinyl siding. Good stone dealers will also have all the necessary trim and accessory pieces to do steps, sills, corners etc.

Dallas Energy Efficient Products has all three products and would love to come to your home and demo the products as well as show you what your house would look like with these and other products on your home on a computer simulation. To get a free estimate please call 972-398-6105.

January 2010

Every year most of us are challenged to review the last year and to try to find ways to improve upon it. Some will try to stop smoking, to eat less or to be a better parent. How about finding new ways to save more money. Some of you were able to take advantage of the home energy tax credit that was available last year. Taking advantage of tax credits up to $1,500 was great. For those who didn’t it looks like you’ll have another chance this year.

Saving money is important but there are other reasons why you should improve your home’s energy efficiency. One, to teach your children the importance of energy conservation and not wasting resources we already have. Two, to be a better stewart of the this earth that we have to protect it by not wasting its resources. Three, to provide a more comfortable home for our families. There are many ways to do it, from recycling, programmable thermostats, and more efficient A/C systems. But the way that will help produce the most results will be by replacing those old inefficient windows that you have. Most of the energy loss that we have comes through our windows and doors. The new glass systems do a tremendous job of controlling heat loss and gain and keeping your home comfortable. Window replacements run from about $300 to $1,000 per window installed depending on the kind you choose. Custom wood windows will cost the most with vinyl windows costing the least. Buying too cheap and you get mechanical frame (screwed together) and rubber seals (seal failure) with Low E2 with argon gas. The next step up offers fusion welded frames and lifetime seals and the most current glass using Low E 3 with Argon gas. Paying alittle more pays big dividends. Your also get experienced installation crews and better warranties.

Please call and set up your no hassel free estimate at 972-398-6105.
